The Life Coaching Industry
What would change if you finally did the thing you keep saying you want to do?
Started the business. Changed careers. Stopped putting off the conversation. Followed through on a decision without asking twelve people whether it was the right one.
That distance between wanting something and actually doing it is where life coaching gets interesting.
People have access to more information than ever. They can download a book, listen to a podcast, and collect excellent advice before breakfast. Applying it to their own lives is another matter.
Life coaching gives that work a place on the calendar. A person brings a goal, a problem, or a decision. A coach helps them examine it, question their assumptions, and decide what to do next.
And there is a growing body of evidence that these conversations can make a difference.
The benefits of life coaching
The International Coaching Federation’s 2022 consumer research asked 10,841 people who had experienced coaching what they gained from it. Forty-two percent reported better communication. Forty-one percent reported greater confidence or self-esteem. Thirty-eight percent reported improved work-life balance, and the same proportion reported increased productivity. These are clients’ reported experiences—an encouraging picture of what people take away from coaching.
Think about what those benefits can mean in an ordinary week.
Speaking up in a meeting. Making a request without apologizing for it. Leaving work on time. Finishing something that has been sitting on a to-do list for six months.
The changes can look small from the outside. To the person making them, they can be enormous.
Researchers have also put coaching through more rigorous tests. A 2023 review of 20 randomized controlled studies found that executive coaching improved goal achievement, resilience, and people’s confidence in their ability to take effective action. Those findings concern executive coaching specifically, but they contribute to the broader evidence that coaching can help people make measurable progress.
This is part of what makes the profession so compelling. A useful conversation can become a different decision. That decision can become a new habit. Over time, those habits can change the direction of a life.
A growing coaching industry
The industry has been growing, too.
The 2025 Global Coaching Study, commissioned by ICF and conducted by PwC, estimated nearly 123,000 coach practitioners worldwide. Annual revenue across the professional coaching industry reached $5.34 billion, up 17% from the previous study. These figures include executive, leadership, and other coaching specialties alongside life coaching.
The possibility of becoming a life coach
For someone considering becoming a life coach, the appeal goes beyond joining a growing profession.
Imagine building a working day around helping people move forward. Listening closely enough to notice the assumption someone has mistaken for a fact. Asking a question that opens up a possibility they had dismissed. Helping a client turn “someday” into a specific next step.
There is satisfaction in work that asks you to pay attention—and gives that attention a purpose.
Learning to coach can also become an education in your own thinking. In a small study of 29 coaches-in-training, participating in personal coaching was associated with greater progress toward goals and increased personal insight. It was exploratory research, but it points to something especially appealing about coach education: the person learning to help others may grow through the process as well.
A coaching career can take different shapes. Some practitioners build independent businesses. Others bring coaching into leadership, education, consulting, or an existing professional practice. The opportunity is flexible; building a sustainable income still takes skill, clients, and business development.
For the right person, that combination is exciting: a useful skill, meaningful work, and room to create a practice that reflects their interests.
