Thoughts on the Woo

life coaching tools

I love talking about the woo. I also love talking about goals, action, and getting things done.

I don’t want to choose between the spiritual experience of life and the practical human experience. I want to let them work together.

In Episode 355, I shared how I approach energy, intuition, the law of attraction, and the practical work of creating results. Right in the middle is my favorite subject: emotion.

I think that middle space gives us an opportunity to use both sides without getting lost in either.

The two sides of life coaching

Some of my colleagues are interested in astrology, numerology, spiritual guides, channeling, and different dimensions. I love hearing about and studying those ideas.

Others want practical, evidence-based approaches they can use in everyday life. I love that conversation, too.

People sometimes ask which one creates the results in my life. I talk about spiritual connections and energy, and I also talk about action, goals, and practical choices.

My approach isn’t to reject one side. It is to explore how they can support each other.

The Model gives a straightforward way to understand emotion: thoughts create feelings, which drive actions and results. People who aren’t interested in my spiritual ideas can still use that practical tool.

On the other side, some people want to focus only on presence and allowing life to unfold. I want to be present and also create.

I want the full human experience

I believe being here as a human is purposeful. I don’t believe the world is supposed to contain only kindness, peace, and love.

Contrast and negative emotion are part of being alive. The goal, for me, isn’t to become so spiritually peaceful that I stop participating in the human world.

I also don’t want to become so focused on tactics that I miss emotion, intuition, or the experience of spirituality.

I want both. I want to study and experience spiritual ideas, then use that understanding in the practical work of creating a life.

I think that balance has served me. I haven’t wanted to disappear into meditation or become lost in constant hustle.

Emotion is the lane where the two meet.

Try a belief on and see what it creates

One of the things I value as a coach is being open to different belief systems. When someone shares a theory about religion, spirituality, or life, I want to understand it.

I want to know whether it resonates with me and what experience it creates for them.

I talked with a friend who didn’t believe in an afterlife. I was interested in why we choose different stories about what happens when we die.

Were we taught them? Do they comfort us? Do they influence how we choose to live?

Ask whether the beliefs you have adopted serve the life you want to create. Do they call you toward the person you want to be?

I don’t need to convince another person to share every belief I have. I want to know how it affects my life.

How I used the law of attraction practically

I love the law of attraction and deliberate thinking. I also want a practical application beyond making a vision board.

When I listened to Abraham, I learned about accessing the emotion you want to feel when you achieve something. I practiced imagining the experience of receiving a large amount of money.

I would imagine people winning tens of millions in a lottery and put myself in the experience of receiving it.

From a purely tactical perspective, it might look like daydreaming. I wasn’t making an offer or producing something during that exercise.

But it created a feeling of abundance and well-being. I was practicing the emotional experience.

That feeling gave me motivation and energy to take action. I could transfer it into building my business, putting myself out there, and being willing to fail.

From my spiritual perspective, I believed I was aligning with what I wanted. From a practical perspective, I was generating emotion that fueled work.

I value both ways of understanding it.

Stay open to the experience

I have had meditative and energetic experiences that I interpreted in different ways. At times I have used words such as God, spirit guides, intuition, or energy.

My human brain wants labels it can understand. I stay open to the possibility that it doesn’t fully understand every experience.

I enjoy trying approaches that help me create positive emotion and action. I would rather explore what works for me than spend my time trying to prove that another person’s spiritual experience is wrong.

A friend had an experience with numerology that helped her make sense of her life and feel more effective. Someone who doesn’t believe in numerology might reject the explanation. Her emotional experience was still real to her.

The questions I find useful are about whether an approach helps you evolve and create the results you want.

I don’t need to make one idea my entire identity. I can be curious, try something, and notice how it serves me.

Let the two sides dance

I don’t want to give up my humanness for spirituality. I don’t want to give up spirituality for practical action.

I want the magic, coincidences, intuition, and rich experiences people describe. I also want to understand what they did to create their lives.

For me, the purpose of being here includes evolving through both. The negative contrast isn’t something to remove from the experience. It is part of the life I want to participate in.

You can be open to emotion and spiritual possibility while still making decisions, setting goals, and doing work.

You can also remain practical without closing yourself to wonder.

That is my invitation: explore both sides, see how they work together in your life, and notice what becomes possible when you don’t demand that one cancel the other.
