Showing Up
Treat an ordinary day like something you deserve to be ready for.
Who are you getting ready for today? If your answer is no one, because you work at home or do not have an important appointment, consider this: you are there.
You can see yourself. You experience the way you care for yourself. You are worth preparing for, even on an ordinary Tuesday.
Showing up is both mental and physical. The meaning you give to your day influences how you prepare for it and how you participate in it.
Notice what you believe about your day
Ask yourself whether your day matters enough to get ready for. Ask whether you are waiting for a meeting, a different body, or a special occasion before taking care with how you present yourself.
When you think that nothing important is happening, you may feel indifferent and postpone getting ready. When you think your day deserves your attention, you may feel engaged and take a few deliberate steps to prepare.
That is the Self Coaching Model in daily life: thoughts create feelings, feelings drive actions, and actions create results. The clothes are not creating your worth. Your thinking about yourself is shaping the care you offer yourself.
Make getting ready easier
You do not need an elaborate wardrobe or a costly routine. Start by reducing decisions.
Choose a few places to shop that reliably work for your body and your life. Look for outfits you can repeat instead of beginning from scratch every morning.
A small collection of clothes you love can serve you better than a crowded closet of things you are constantly adjusting, saving for later, or hoping will eventually fit.
Try removing everything from your closet and putting back only what fits now and what you want to wear. Notice how much clearer your choices become.
Choose fit and comfort deliberately
A size on a label is information, not a verdict about you. Choose the garment that fits your body, and consider alterations when they would make it work better.
Sit down, stand up, and walk in what you are trying on. Wear the shoes you intend to pair with the outfit. If you spend the whole time pulling, smoothing, or negotiating with the clothes, notice that.
The same applies to shoes. Looking polished does not require tolerating shoes that hurt. Choose things that allow you to move through the day comfortably.
Know your own style
There is a difference between thinking something is beautiful and recognizing it as something you want to wear.
In this episode, I describe using a two-word style statement to clarify my choices. You can use that idea to identify the qualities you want your clothes to express.
Maybe you want clean and relaxed. Maybe you want classic with a playful detail. Choose words that help you recognize yourself rather than buying everything you admire on someone else.
Then ask whether a purchase fits that intention and the life you actually lead.
Create a routine you can repeat
Decide when you will shower, get dressed, and take care of the details that help you feel prepared. If you exercise first, build getting ready into what happens afterward.
Keep the routine simple enough to use regularly. Organized clothes and a tidy bag or wallet can reduce the little negotiations that slow you down.
Imagine an unexpected video call or an errand you want to run. Being ready can make it easier to participate instead of declining because you have not prepared.
Show up before the special occasion arrives
You do not have to copy anyone else's style. The question is whether you are caring for yourself in a way that feels intentional to you.
Do not postpone that care until you reach a goal or someone else is watching. Begin with the day and the body you have now.
Your daily life is something you get to show up for. Let the way you prepare reflect that.
